What self-hosting means here

Self-hosting means the application runs on a server that belongs to you rather than on a vendor’s platform. Your documents, photos, passwords or files sit in one place you can point at, and there is no seat count, no usage tier and nobody else’s terms of service between you and your data.

What normally makes that hard is everything around the application. A server has to exist, a database has to be created and connected, a certificate has to be issued and renewed, and every release has to be applied by someone paying attention. That work is the reason most people who want to self-host never start. On AvaHost it is done before you arrive: you choose an application from the catalog, and what you get back is a running instance on your own domain.

Why not just rent a plain VPS?

You can, and for one app you know well it may be the cheaper answer. The difference shows up in the second month.

On a bare server you are the person who notices a certificate expiring, who reads the changelog before a major version, who remembers that the database has never actually been backed up, and who is holding the pager when an update goes badly on a Friday.

The plans here cost about what a small VPS costs, and the certificate, the database, the update schedule and the backups come with them. If running the server is the part you enjoy, rent a VPS. If the application is the part you wanted, this removes the rest.

What stays yours to manage

The application itself. Its users, its content, its settings and its permissions are yours, configured through its own interface in the browser. We keep the instance running, current and backed up; we do not administer the software inside it.

Nothing here is a lock-in. These are open-source applications with their own export tools and their own data formats, and they behave the same on our infrastructure as they do anywhere else. If you move, you take the data with you in a format the project itself defined.

F.A.Q

  • Automatic backups, automatic application updates, one-click deploy from the catalog, and HTTPS on your own domain. Plans start from €2/mo.

  • Yes. Several apps can share one plan’s CPU, RAM, and storage. That is marked Important on the page because headroom is shared — a heavy app can mean moving to a larger plan.

  • You can, and for one app you already know well it may cost less. These plans sit in the same price band as a small VPS; certificates, the update schedule, and backups come with them. If running the server is what you enjoy, rent a VPS. If the application is what you wanted, this removes the rest.

  • The application itself: users, content, settings, and permissions, through its own interface. We keep the instance running, current, and backed up; we do not administer the software inside it. These are open-source apps with their own export tools — if you leave, the data goes with you.

  • Six plans: AVA One €2 (1 core / 1 GB / 15 GB) through AVA Ultra €40 (8 cores / 16 GB / 200 GB). Each app page names a recommended starting plan; catalog filters sort by price, RAM, CPU, and storage.
